Responding to a Region in Need
December 2004

Friends have inquired about effective ways to express compassion for the loss of life and property in SE Asia.  I recently received an e-mail from Dr. Judo Poerwowidagdo, the Director of the Center for Empowering Reconciliation and Peace in Jakarta, about how best to respond to this disaster.  Judo has been working throughout Indonesia on peace issues during the last year in Northern Sumatra and the border of Aceh, the hardest hit province in the hardest hit nation of Southeast Asia during this earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Judo is a highly respected mediation and development expert and affirms that because of Church World Services partner organizations are already on the ground and working on this tsunami disaster, monetary donations to Church World Service would be a very effective and efficient way to help relieve the enormous human suffering resulting from the disaster.

Bob Edgar, the Executive Director of the National Council of Churches in the USA, has been providing excellent and updated information on the relief work being carried out by Church World Service.  Please refer to the link below to the National Council of Churches and Church World Service Websites for additional information.

Our friends in Indonesia express their gratitude for the help and generosity of friends in the US in this greatest natural international disaster of the century. Plowshares is appreciative of this coordinated response by the Church community to this tragedy.

Peace,
Bob Evans
